- Beating, kicking, torturing, or overloading animals
- Employing unfit, injured, or diseased animals for work
- Abandoning animals without reasonable cause
- Keeping animals in cramped or unhealthy conditions
- Failing to provide sufficient food, water, or shelter
Punishment
- First offence: Fine up to ₹50
- Subsequent offences (within 3 years):
- Fine between ₹25 to ₹100, or
- Imprisonment up to 3 months, or both

Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860
Certain acts of animal cruelty are treated as criminal offences under the IPC.
Section 428
- Killing, poisoning, maiming, or rendering useless any animal worth ₹10 or more
- Punishment: Imprisonment up to 2 years, or fine, or both
Section 429
- Killing or maiming animals such as cows, elephants, horses, camels, dogs, etc.
- Punishment: Imprisonment up to 5 years, or fine, or both
Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972
Cruelty towards wild animals is dealt with strictly under this Act.
Offences include:
- Hunting or capturing wild animals
- Trading in animal body parts
- Destroying wildlife habitats
Punishment may include:
- Imprisonment up to 7 years
- Heavy fines
This law provides special protection to endangered species.
